In December I was back in the Netherlands to facilitate the Liberating Structures Immersion Workshop after migrating to Germany the month before. Taking the opportunity, my old colleagues/friends Roel & Just invited me to record a podcast before we went to a meetup at Keytoe (awesome Dutch company living quite some teal and agile principles, without using any of the dogmatic jargon).

How can I take my job really serious and still propose to call it Chief Blabla Officer? On one hand because it’s like the Wild West; the roles of Chief Happiness/Culture/Joy/People/Etcetera Officer feel like uncharted territory and new synonyms keep popping up for it every few months. My guess is most of them have purposes that are close to each other, but kind of hard to tell for sure.
On the other hand it’s irony; mocking the concept of having titles for important topics and then handing that title out to a single person. If we’re being realistic you’re only going to be successful in those topics if they’re lived by a large part of your organization, if not the whole.

During the episode we talked about some books, so here are the titles:

  • Radical Candor by Kim Scott (my main recommendation)
  • Work Rules by Laszlo Bock (Roel mentions this)
  • Creativity, Inc. by Amy Wallace and Edwin Catmull (Roel talks about this one)
  • An Everyone Culture: Becoming a Deliberately Developmental Organisation by Robert Kegan and Lisa Laskow Lahey (this is the book I couldn’t find)

As you can hear in the podcast below, we had a great time while reflecting on the ideas and insights on my new role as ‘Chief Culture Officer’ at fable+. Hope you get as much fun and value out of listening as we got out of recording. Would love to hear that from you or if you want more podcasts like this.
